Abstract
This paper reports our experience with 72 cases of spontaneous pneumothorax at Kyoungpook
National University Hospital during a eight year period. (Jannury 1960 to March 1969)
There were 39 patients with tuberculous origin and 33 with non tuberculous nature. It was
found that 70.6% of patients were between 20 to 40 years of ages, and this condition was much
more common in males: the male to female ratio was 5 to 1.
The right contralateral side apeared in 40% of cases and pleural effusion was noted in 56.9% of
patients. Among the non-tuberculous (33 cases), five patients had emphysematous blebs ruptured,
and six patients had pneumonic lung lesions.
Ovas of paragonimus Westermanni were found in two cases. In remaining 20 cases, no causative
factors were found.
Patients were treated with bedrest, needle aspiration, closed thoracotomy drainage or thoracotomy
depends on the status of patient, degree of lung collapse and pathology.
Two thirds of the patients were treated with closed thoracotomy drainage and ha satisfactory
clinical improvements.
